Summer day Therapy

We provide individual and group therapy for teens, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, trauma, and life transitions, using a relational and trauma-informed approach. Our work is grounded in helping clients feel seen, supported, and empowered to make meaningful change. We practice virtually and in-person in Long Island. The right fit matters. If therapy hasn’t worked for you or your child before, it doesn’t mean you can’t heal, it just means you haven’t found your person yet.

“Shira skillfully balances encouraging you to accept yourself as you are, while also giving you the tools to get closer to your most meaningful life.”- Former Client

It’s not about “fixing” you (because you’re not broken). It’s about helping you feel more grounded, more confident, and more like you. Oh, you don’t know who you is? No worries, we can figure that out together too! In our work, I’ll meet you where you are. We will explore what’s working, what’s not, and what meaningful change could look like in your life. Whether we are working through anxiety, building self-trust, or navigating big life decisions, we’ll do it at your pace, with curiosity, compassion, and a little bit of humor when it helps.

Therapy gives you the time and space to slow down, reflect, and better understand yourself

We’ll get curious about what’s going on beneath the surface— the patterns, the stuck places, and the parts of you that are ready for something different. This isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about slowing down, tuning in, and creating space to figure things out together.

My Approach

I work with teens, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and life during or after experiences like domestic violence, sexual abuse, or high-conflict relationships. I also support clients living with trichotillomania and other body-focused repetitive behaviors.

My approach is integrative and tailored to each person, drawing from Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness practices, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and psychodynamic perspectives.

DBT SKILLS GROUP

Tired of lashing out, shutting down, or feeling misunderstood? Relationships can be hard- whether with parents, partners, or friends. You might notice yourself reacting quickly, saying things you don't mean, or pulling away when you actually want closeness. These patterns can leave you feeling stuck, guilty, or alone.

You don't have to keep going through the same cycle. Our in-person 7-week DBT group for female young adults (ages 17-22) is designed to help you strengthen your relationships, manage overwhelming emotions, and feel more in control of how you respond.

In this group, you'll:

  • Learn DBT-based tools to regulate emotions and reduce impulsive reactions

  • Practice communication strategies that make it easier to connect without conflict

  • Understand your patterns in relationships and develop healthier ways to respond

  • Build confidence in expressing your needs and setting boundaries

  • Get support from peers who "get it" in a safe, structured environment

Group Details:

  • Facilitator: Shira Somerstein, LCSW

  • Start Date: July 1st, 2026

  • Length: 7 weeks

  • Time: 3pm-4pm

  • Location: Hewlett

  • Fee: $75 per session

    • Sliding scale options available to help ensure cost is not a barrier

If you're ready to stop feeling stuck in the same patterns and start creating the kind of relationships you want, fill out the contact form to schedule a free consultation call to see if this group could be a good fit.
